My Shiny Macbook Air - bordering 3 weeks and fabulous as ever
I am a Mac girl through and through. I'd like to say I've been using Macs all my life but I'd say realistically it's been a good ten years, substantial enough to say I'm not a rookie. I can remember the excitement of getting my Graphite iMac with matching hockey puck mouse and Tangerine toilet seat iBook, slow as molasses but a great conversation piece. Or hooking up my Graphite Airport Base Station, which has been on just about 24/7 for at least 8 years. Still going. And I can't forget my Wallstreet Powerbook G3, a la Carrie Bradshaw, when I started experimenting with geekily tweaking extensions in OS9. All those I look at as good old friends. They never did me wrong.
However, this Macbook Air has got to be the fairest of them all. 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 128GB SSD 2GB RAM spells = speed demon. Initially I wanted to splurge for the latest Rev C HDD model but after reading some forum posts gush on and on about getting on the SSD train, I was very curious and signed up. The day it arrived at the office was Christmas in August. So excited I ripped the box open and turned that thing on immediately. Mac chime! My cubemates were like "is that a Mac I hear?!" Obviously we are Mac deprived at the institution we call the office. Moving along, I was truly amazed at how quick and responsive this machine is, it booted up in no time. I was a bit concerned that 2GB of RAM wouldn't cut it. After all, that's the minimum requirement for OS X, right? Well throw all that nonsense out the window as far as this machine is concerned. It is HIGHLY capable and feels faster than my trusty iMac 24" which has now been demoted for TV and the "heavy duty" jobs, though I do love it still :). But even after loading up Adobe CS3 on the MBA, I am blown away at how it effortlessly serves up Photoshop in about 3 seconds. That's right, 3. Not 30 seconds, not 3 minutes. 3 SECONDS. Ugh, the sheer processing speed is just silly. Not to mention it is a joy to carry. Literally I carry it just about everywhere. It stows away so easily in my messenger bag, I don't even know it's there. Apple engineers are no joke. And to think, I was about to settle for an HP netbook. Well that thing's gladly out of my hair ;) What was I even thinking.
The Macbook Air is just about perfection and damn near everything I'd ever want in a laptop; my only knock is the frequency of the fan. And really it's probably Safari which was causing it because after my switch to Opera, I haven't had the fan go on once. The screen is EXCELLENT and so much easier on the eyes without the glass overlay on the Macbook (Pro)s. It's sexy, thin, light, powerful, fast, sexy. Sexy. Definitely the dark horse in Mac's lineup. But I don't mind in the least. I'm glad it's underrated. In a sea of Macbooks and Macbook Pros, I chose to deviate. Cause when I get people asking me bewildered, "...Is that a....?!"I can just grin and proudly respond, "Macbook Air, of course." Just something very satisfying about saying that, channeling the inner Mac snob in me :P
I look forward to upgrading to Snow Leopard, which I immediately took advantage of purchasing through Apple's Up To Date program for $10. The system has my order in. All I am waiting for is the ship date and I'm golden :) Happy times.
